Doping affair at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney
Leipold won at the 2000 Olympics with a clear victory (4: 0) on the Americans Brandon Slay the gold medal . However, three days later he had to surrender the title of Olympic champion and the medal again, because ten times the permitted amount of the substance nandrolone was found in his blood. However, the proceedings against him came up with some inconsistencies:
- During the test, the decisive B-sample contained 85 ml and thus 35 ml more than when only 50 ml were dispensed; after a related objection by Leipold, the rest of the sample remained undetectable.
- The substance nandrolone in the determined concentration (one thousandth of a tablet ) would demonstrably not have brought Leipold any competitive advantages.
- Nandrolone, a substance similar to testosterone , can also be produced naturally in the body even in higher concentrations. Leipold had previously suffered a testicle contusion in a competition . In this context, there were repeated general accusations that the maximum permitted value for nandrolone was set arbitrarily and was in no way related to the value at which the substance actually began to increase performance.
Nevertheless, Leipold was banned for a year in the last instance, but did not have to bear the costs of the procedure himself. Since his case hangs in the balance between a legally achieved sporting victory on the one hand and the condemnation by the sports umbrella organizations on the other, Leipold may today again legally call himself the winner of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , but for legal reasons he cannot bear the official title of Olympic Champion . The gold medal also remained in the possession of his American final opponent.
He was allowed to participate as national coach at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
