List of revoked Olympic medals
The list of revoked Olympic medals lists the medal winners at the Olympic Games for whom the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has subsequently revoked a medal they have won. This can be the case, for example, in the event of a violation of the doping regulations or other attempted fraud, while violations of amateur status were previously also considered a reason. The athletes concerned must return their medals to the IOC so that they can be presented to the athletes who have moved up.
From 1948 to 2020, a total of 149 medals were permanently revoked, nine medals remained vacant or were not reassigned. The vast majority of withdrawals occurred after 2000 because of improved methods of doping testing . Most withdrawals were in athletics (50, including 19 gold medals) and weightlifting (48, including 14 gold medals). Athletes in these two sports are therefore responsible for almost two thirds of all cases. The most affected country is Russia with 43 medals withdrawn, which is more than a quarter of all cases. The summer games most affected were the 2008 Summer Olympics with 50 withdrawals, and the 2002 Winter Olympics stand out with 13 withdrawals.
Remarks
The list is as of February 2020.
In team competitions such as B. Relays, the IOC can withdraw the medal from all team members due to the violation of an individual athlete. Likewise, the responsible world association of any Olympic sport can withdraw a medal from an athlete for violating the rules of the respective sport. The athletes have the opportunity to have their case finally assessed by the International Court of Justice .
Only eight withdrawals concern grounds other than doping offenses:
- In 1913, the American athlete Jim Thorpe had to return two gold medals he had won at the 1912 Summer Games . The IOC had learned that he had previously played baseball for a small amount of money, thereby violating amateur status. In 1982, 29 years after his death, a foundation was able to convince the IOC that the withdrawal had been illegal. Thorpe's children received replicas of 1912 gold medals from IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch in 1983 .
- The Swedish dressage team, which had won gold in the team competition at the 1948 Summer Games , was subsequently disqualified on April 27, 1949 by the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) and with the consent of the IOC. Gehnäll Persson had been promoted to ensign three weeks before the competition . Only two and a half weeks after the competition, the Swedish army demoted him back to sergeant . According to the regulations of the time, only officers and “gentlemen's riders” were allowed to participate, but not NCOs. Since Persson had only been promoted for the period around the games, this was considered a rule violation. The incident led the FEI to modernize its conditions of participation, which it perceived to be outdated.
- The Swedish boxer Ingemar Johansson was disqualified in the heavyweight final of the 1952 Summer Games by the referee for alleged "inactivity" and did not even receive the silver medal that would have been awarded to him in the event of a defeat. The IOC corrected this decision in 1982 and presented him with the medal.
- The German figure skaters Marika Kilius and Hans-Jürgen Bäumler had to return their pair skating silver medal they had won at the 1964 Winter Games because they had previously signed a professional contract; In 1987 they were fully rehabilitated.
- The weightlifter Ibragim Samadow , who competed for the United Team at the 1992 Summer Games , was so disappointed with his performance that he threw his bronze medal on the floor at the award ceremony and ran away. The IOC then disqualified him and did not award the medal to the fourth-placed because the incident occurred after the competition.
- A similar case of unsportsmanlike conduct involved Swedish wrestler Ara Abrahamian at the 2008 Summer Games . He was stripped of a bronze medal after rejecting it at the awards ceremony in protest of a controversial referee decision.
- In 2010, the IOC recognized the Chinese gymnasts from the bronze medal they had won in the team all-round competition at the 2000 Summer Games . Dong Fangxiao , who was 14 years old at the time, was reported as a 17-year-old in order to avoid the required minimum age of 16. The dizziness was exposed when she applied to the 2008 Summer Games with her correct date of birth as a technical assistant. The medal went to the United States team.

Ivan Zichan | |||||
Winter 2014 | Alexander Legkov | Russia | Cross-country skiing M, 50 km freestyle | The IOC set up the Oswald Commission in July 2016 in response to the McLaren Report commissioned by WADA because of the systematic Russian doping fraud at the 2014 Winter Olympics . In November and December 2017, she disqualified 43 Russian athletes, including 16 medalists, and banned them from the Olympic Games for life. With one exception, all athletes appealed to the CAS. At the hearing in January 2018, 28 of them were right because there was insufficient evidence. Their disqualification was lifted and nine athletes received their medals back. The IIHF appealed against this decision, as Bäckström had been treated with this agent for years because of an allergic condition. In March 2014, the IOC Disciplinary Commission decided to return the medal. |
