The weightlifting of the men in the class up to 56 kg (bantamweight) at the 2012 Olympic Summer Games in London took place on July 29, 2012 at the ExCeL Exhibition Center . 18 athletes from 15 countries competed.

The competition consisted of two parts: tearing (Snatch) and pushing (Clean and Jerk) . The participants started in two groups in the snatch, in which they had three attempts. Whoever remained without a valid attempt was eliminated. Each starter again had three attempts in pushing. The athlete with the highest aggregate weight won. In the event of a tie, lower body weight was decisive.

  • Winner Om Yun-chol (PRK) won North Korea's first Olympic victory in this weight class.
  • The Tunisian Khalil El-Maaoui , lying in second position after the snatch, did not start the push .
  • The original third-placed Valentin Xristov had won the first medal for Azerbaijan in this weight class, but this was in March 2019 because of a doping offense disallowed . The medal has not yet been re-awarded.
