A record hunt arose between Zhou Lulu and Tatjana Kaschirina. In the snatch, Zhou first improved the Olympic record by 2 kg to 142 kg, Kaschirina countered with 144 kg. In the second attempt, Kaschirina lifted 149 kg and improved the world record by 1 kg. In the third attempt, she even achieved 151 kg. With 181 kg in the push, Zhou then improved the Olympic record in a duel to 327 kg. In the second attempt, Kaschirina also added 181 kg and thus achieved a new duel world record with 332 kg. Zhou's third attempt over 187 kg meant not only a new Olympic record in jerking, but also another two-way world record with 333 kg. Zhou's win was the third by a Chinese woman in this weight class in the fourth Olympic competition.
The International Olympic Committee convicted the originally third-placed Armenian Hripsime Khurschudjan of doping fraud and in November 2016 revoked her bronze medal.
