history

Belgorod

Belgorod was first mentioned in a document in 1237. According to archaeological finds, a settlement had existed since the 10th century, which at that time belonged to the Kievan Rus . The actual founding year is seen in 1596, when Belgorod was expanded into a fortress. The city belonged to the southern line of defense of the Russian tsarism against the Crimean Tatars . The Belgorod Line extended from the Volga via Voronezh- on- Don to eastern Ukraine . With the victory over the Crimean Khanate in 1785, Belgorod lost its fortress status.

The construction of the Kursk - Charkow railway line (1869) then significantly boosted the city's economic development. From the end of 1917 Belgorod belonged to the territory of the independent Ukrainian People's Republic , from April 1918 to the Ukrainian State , a (de facto) German puppet state under Pavlo Skoropadskyj . After his overthrow, the city was captured by the Red Army on December 20, 1918 and joined the Russian SFSR . For a short time, however, the provisional "Workers 'and Peasants' Government of Ukraine" under Georgi Pyatakov had its seat in Belgorod .

From October 25, 1941 to August 5, 1943 the city was occupied by the German Wehrmacht . Before the German invasion, many residents had fled to the east, so that the city only had about 20,000 inhabitants. From 1942 onwards, thousands of remaining residents of working age were deported to Germany. On February 5, 1942, partisans managed to briefly retake the city. In August 1943, Belgorod was again the scene of fierce fighting during the Belgorod-Kharkov Operation of the Red Army. Over 90% of the city was destroyed. At the time of the liberation, on August 5, 1943, there were fewer than 700 people in Belgorod.

1954 Belgorod was the capital of the neighboring oblasts from parts of the Kursk and Voronezh newly formed Belgorod Oblast .

Today the city is the economic and administrative center of the region and the seat of an archbishop .
