Swetlana Wassiljewna Chorkina ( Russian Светлана Васильевна Хоркина ; born January 19, 1979 in Belgorod , Soviet Union ) is a former Russian gymnast and current politician . During her time as an active athlete, she won a total of seven medals at three Olympic Games, including two gold medals on her flagship device, the uneven bars . In addition, she was world champion nine times on various machines . Since 2007 she has been a member of the Russian State Duma for the United Russia party .

Life and accomplishments

Svetlana Chorkina started gymnastics in her hometown of Belgorod at the age of four. Her talent was soon recognized, so that she started doing competitive sports in 1985. In 1986 she competed in her first youth competitions. She also started in the senior class for the Profsojus Belgorod association. Your trainers were Boris Pilkin and Alexander Timonkin.

First successes (1994–1995)

In 1994 Chorkina competed for the first time among the seniors. At the World Championships in Brisbane , she was only eighth on the ground , but won the silver medal on both the uneven bars and the jump . In the same year she won the bronze medal with the Russian team at the World Championships in Dortmund and the silver medal at the European Championships in Stockholm . In addition, she was second in the all-around and European champion on the uneven bars.

The following year she was second in the all- around competition and world champion on uneven bars at the World Championships in Sabae . This victory is the beginning of a series that only ended with seventh place at the 2002 World Championships in Debrecen . Until then, Chorkina wins on the uneven bars at every world championship. She is world champion on this machine five times.

Great career (1996-2004)

In 1996 Swetlana Chorkina became Olympic champion on the uneven bars for the first time. She also won a silver medal with the Russian team at the Olympic Games in Atlanta . She achieved the same placings at the European Championships in Birmingham .

In 1997 she built on the successes of the previous year and became - as in 1996 - world champion on uneven bars. But Chorkina was also able to secure the world championship title in the all-around competition this year. The year before, she had no chance in this discipline at the Olympic Games. There are also silver medals on the bar , on the floor and in the team all-around competition. Discussions about her person arise when she posed for Russian Playboy in November 1997 .

In 1998 and 1999, she added gold, silver and bronze medals at World and European Championships to her collection. The only thing that she could not defend in 1999 in Tianjin was her world championship title in the all-around competition . Due to a mistake on the bar, she only comes in twelfth.

At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , Chorkina won again on the uneven bars. She left her starting place in the jumping final to the younger Jelena Samolodtschikowa , who won it and relegated Chorkina to second place on the ground. However, Chorkina could not achieve her goal of becoming Olympic champion in the all-around competition. After a good start on the ground, she was in the lead, but then fell on the first of her two attempts at the jump. She also fell on the uneven bars and lost all chance for a medal. In the fourth run it turned out that the jumping horse was set too low. All gymnasts were given the opportunity to repeat their jump. Chorkina waived, however, because she couldn't win a medal anyway due to her mistake on the uneven bars.

The 2001 World Championships in Ghent were the most successful of their careers. With the Russian team she only had to admit defeat to the Romanians . In addition, she became world champion in all-around competition, on the uneven bars and on the jump. This made her the first female world champion on the new vaulting table, which was first used in 2001. In the same year she was named Europe's Sportswoman of the Year .

In 2002 she was European champion in the all-around competition, on the uneven bars and with the team, but she cannot defend any of her world championship titles. She left the World Championships in Debrecen without a single medal. In the same year she gained experience in another profession: she plays theater under the direction of Sergei Vinogradov. Once a month she appears in Moscow in the play Venus , in which she plays the actress Brenda Venus, who is courting the aging Henry Miller . In addition, Chorkina finished her sports studies at the Belgorod State University in 2002.

In 2003 she became the all-around world champion for the third time , making her the most successful gymnast of all time. In 2004 she was once again European champion on the uneven bars and third on the bar, as well as third in the team all-around competition. With that she won the 20th European Championship medal of her career. No other gymnast has won more medals at European championships.

Chorkina did not succeed in setting another record and becoming Olympic champion on the uneven bars for the third time in a row at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens . She fell in the uneven bars final and was only eighth. For this she won her first all-around medal with a second place at her third and last Olympic Games. Following the all- around final, she criticized the judges for feeling that she had been treated unfairly. At the same time, she announced that she would end her active career and apply for an office in the FIG .

After the active period (since 2004)

Swetlana Chorkina (2009)

In 2004 Khorkina ran for the presidency of the Russian Gymnastics Federation, but is subject to her competitor Yuri Titov. Since then she has worked for the association as vice-president. She was also a member of the FIG Athletes Commission for the period from 2005 to 2008.

In the Russian parliamentary elections in 2007, Khorkina ran for the United Russia party and was elected to the Russian State Duma. There she holds the office of Vice-President of the Committee for Youth Affairs. Chorkina is thus part of the group of well-known young women popularly known as Putin's Girls who are committed to United Russia , and which also includes gymnast Alina Kabaeva and speed skater Svetlana Schurova .

In May 2008, Khorkina published her autobiography in Russia.

Private

Khorkina became the mother of a son on July 21, 2005. The child's father is the Georgian actor Levan Uchaneishvili.
