Shannon Lee Miller , married Shannon Philips , (born March 10, 1977 in Rolla , Missouri ) is a former American gymnast . She won medals in two Olympic Games.

Career

Shortly after she was born, her parents moved to Edmond , Oklahoma . She started doing gymnastics there when she was five and trained with Steve Nunno when she was nine. Her first major championship was the 1991 World Gymnastics Championships in Indianapolis . After she had won silver with the American squad behind the Soviet squad, she also won silver on the uneven bars , where she was only defeated by the North Korean Gwang Suk Kim .

In 1992 she took part in the Olympic Games in Barcelona and won bronze with the American team behind the teams from the CIS and Romania. In the all-around competition, Miller won silver behind Tetjana Guzu from the CIS. In the individual finals, Miller won three more medals: silver on the balance beam behind Tetjana Lyssenko and bronze on the uneven bars and on the floor.

In 1993 and 1994 Miller was the best gymnast in the world and won the world championship in all-around in both years. In 1993 in Birmingham she also won on the floor and on the uneven bars; In 1994 in Brisbane , she won gold on the balance beam. In 1995 Miller won gold at the Pan American Games in Mar del Plata in the all- around competition, with the team, as well as on the floor and uneven bars, and she received silver for her jumping exercise.
