Sanne Wevers (born September 17, 1991 in Leeuwarden ) is a Dutch gymnast . She won the gold medal on the balance beam at the 2016 Olympic Games . Her twin sister Lieke Wevers is also a gymnast.

successes

Wevers started doing gymnastics at the age of twelve. She competed in her first international competition in 2007. In 2008 she took part in the European Gymnastics Championships . Suzanne Harmes was preferred to her as the only Dutch participant for the Olympic Games in Beijing . She took part in the 2010 World Championships . Due to various injuries, she missed the 2012 Olympic Games in London . At the European Championships in 2015 she won bronze on the uneven bars and silver on the balance beam at the World Championships in the same year. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, she won gold on the balance beam in front of the Dutch royal couple and completely surprisingly beat the favorite Simone Biles , who had made a mistake. This makes her the first Dutch female gymnast to win an individual medal at the Olympic Games. The Netherlands won gold in the team in 1928.

Wevers invented an element in gymnastics named after her (balance beam, two turns with the leg stretched out horizontally). She is known for writing down the gymnastics difficulties in a notebook after each exercise in order to compare them with the grade of the jury.
