Shawn Machel Johnson East (born Shawn Machel Johnson on January 19, 1992 in Des Moines , Iowa ) is a former American gymnast .

Sports

Shawn Johnson started gymnastics in 1995. At the US Junior Championships in 2006 in St. Paul , she achieved her first outstanding results: She won the titles in jumping, on the balance beam , on the ground and in all- around ; she won the silver medal on the uneven bars. From 2007 she started in the elite area and won the titles on the floor, on the balance beam and in all-around at her first championships in San Jose ; Bronze was added to the uneven bars. At the Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro , Johnson won with the team, in the all-around, on the uneven bars and on the balance beam; she came second on the floor. She also started very successfully at the World Championships in Stuttgart and won with the team, in the all-around and on the ground; she was eighth on the balance beam. At the US championships she again won the all-around title.

The 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing were also successful for Johnson : She won silver both with the team and in the all- around competition behind her compatriot Nastia Liukin and on the ground behind the Romanian Sandra Izbașa . She was able to win the gold medal on the balance beam.

In 2010, Johnson tore his cruciate ligament while skiing. After two operations, she made a comeback in 2011. However, pain in her knee at the Visa Championships 2011 forced her to forego floor exercise and only do a simplified beam exercise. She could not qualify for the World Championships in Tokyo. In 2012 she announced her retirement from the sport.

Private

Shawn Johnson attended a public high school in Iowa . At the latest by winning the gold medal at the Olympic Games, it gained popularity in the USA. Among other things, she spoke the Pledge of Allegiance at the Democratic Party's nomination conference in 2008. In July 2015, she got engaged to her boyfriend Andrew East. Their wedding took place on April 16, 2016. She has her own YouTube channel, which she also actively uses.

In 2009 Shawn Johnson won season 8 of the dance show Dancing with the Stars . In the final, she prevailed against Gilles Marini and Melissa Rycroft together with professional dance partner Mark Ballas . At 17, she is the youngest ever winner of the show. In the All Star version in the fall of 2012, she took second place on the side of Derek Hough behind Melissa Rycroft.
