The balance beam is a piece of sports equipment for women in apparatus gymnastics , also for all-around competitions . It consists of a 5 m long and 10 cm wide wooden beam (sometimes other materials are also used), which is located on supports up to 1.2 m above the ground. Gymnastics on the balance beam has been an Olympic discipline since 1936.

Typical gymnastics exercises on the balance beam are jumps, holding parts, flips forwards and backwards and turns. In particular, back handspring , somersault forward and backward, Rondat and handstand rotations part of the repertoire of modern exercises on the balance beam.

The body of modern competition equipment consists of a torsion-free light metal profile, which is covered and padded with a fleece cover. The ends of the joists are also covered with foam to prevent injuries when leaving.

Scoring and rules
