Ecaterina Szabó
Ecaterina Szabó , Hungarian Szabó Katalin , (born January 22, 1968 in Zagon , Covasna district ) is a former Romanian gymnast and current trainer. She is a member of the Hungarian minority in the Szeklerland . She was a multiple Olympic champion as well as world and European champion.
Career
Ecaterina Szabó's year of birth was initially given by the Romanian authorities as 1967 in order to be able to start at international championships. Szabó was a seven-time gold medalist at the European Junior Championships in 1980 and 1982. Her series of successes then continued at the 1983 European Championships in Gothenburg and at the World Championships in Budapest in the same year . The high point of her career was the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles , USA. With four gold medals in floor (with a grade of 10), balance beam, horse jumping and team gymnastics (with a grade of 10 on the balance beam), Ecaterina Szabó was the most successful gymnast in these games. Only 0.05 points separated them from the fifth gold medal, which went to the American Mary Lou Retton in the individual all-around competition . She was denied another gold medal until the 1987 World Championships in Rotterdam . With Romania she achieved the second World Cup team gold in gymnastics history before the Soviet Union .
Life
After retiring from her active career, Ecaterina Szabó studied physical exercise and sport in Bucharest and worked as a trainer in Deva . Maria Olaru , all around world champion in 1999, is one of her successful students .
In 1991 she married the former member of the Romanian national kayak team, Cristian Tamas . From this marriage two sons, Lorenzo and Zeno, emerged. The family left Romania in 1992 and has since lived in Chamalières ( France ), where Szabo works as a trainer. In 2000 Ecaterina Szabó was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame .
