Hong Un-jong (born March 9, 1989 in Hamgyeong-do ) is a North Korean gymnast . At a height of 1.55 m, her competition weight is 43 kg.

Career

Hong Un-jong started gymnastics in 1996. Her twin sister Hong Su-jong is also a successful gymnast. Hong first appeared internationally at the 2006 World Gymnastics Championships in Aarhus, Denmark . There she started in the all-around competition, on the balance beam, on the floor, in the team competition, on the uneven bars and in the jump, but could not qualify for any final and counted 16th place on the jump to her best placement. A year later she again took part in the World Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart and took 23rd place in the all- around event. At the same time, Hong reached the device final on vault, where she missed a medal place behind the Chinese world champion Cheng Fei , her sister Hong Su-jong and the American Alicia Sacramone . In 2008 she finally achieved her first World Cup victory in Maribor , Slovenia , on her paragon , where she also took fourth place on the uneven bars. In the same year, Hong took part in the Summer Olympics in Beijing in the absence of her sister and qualified for the apparatus final on the vault. With jumps and a high degree of difficulty of 6.5 she surprisingly left the German Oksana Chusovitina and the favored Cheng Fei behind and won the gold medal. It was North Korea's second Olympic gymnastics victory since Pae Gil-su's pommel horse gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Games .

Hong starts for the Pyongyang Sports Club and is currently coached by Kim Chun-phil.
