Cheng Fei ( Chinese 程 菲 , Pinyin Chéng Fēi ; born May 29, 1988 in Huangshi ) is a Chinese gymnast . With five world titles and one Olympic victory, she is the most successful Chinese gymnast to date.
Life
Cheng Fei was born into a simple family in Hubei Province . In Huangshi, she started gymnastics at the age of four. Her parents sent her to a state gymnastics school because they believed a career as a professional athlete was a possible way out of poverty. In 1997, Cheng Fei moved to a sports school in Wuhan . In 1997 she was a member of the Hubei Provincial gymnastics team for the first time, before joining the Chinese national team in 2001.
Cheng Fei played her first international competition in 2003 at the Asian Championships, where she won with the team, on the jump and on the ground. In 2004 she made her first appearance in the World Cup. In the same year she was seventh with the Chinese team at the Olympic Games in Athens and fourth in the individual competition on the floor . Her evaluation on the ground sparked protests from the audience, who would have rated Cheng Fei better.
In 2005, Cheng Fei became world champion in jumping , her specialty. She was able to repeat this success in 2006 and 2007. In addition, she became world champion on the ground and in the team all-around competition in Aarhus in 2006 .
After the successful year 2006, Cheng Fei struggled with weight problems and a decreased ability to regenerate . As a result of these problems, she was no longer able to show the jump named after her on the vaulting table. This is a rondat on the springboard followed by a flick-flick with half a turn in the first flight phase and a forward somersault with one and a half turns in the second flight phase.
Through hard training and a diet consisting primarily of water and fruit, Cheng Fei succeeded in returning to her old performance in 2008. She and her teammates won gold in the team all- around at the Olympic Games in Beijing . On her parade device, the jump, Cheng Fei was the favorite in the competition , but was only able to win the bronze medal after falling when landing her self-created jump, the Cheng . She also fell on the ground and took seventh place. On the last day of the Olympic gymnastics competitions in Beijing, Cheng Fei won another bronze medal on the balance beam.
After a cruciate ligament rupture , Cheng Fei had to cancel participation in the 2009 World Championships in London.
Cheng Fei lives and trains in Beijing. In 2012, she announced her resignation
