The Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique ( FIG ) is the International Gymnastics Federation based in Lausanne .

history

On July 23, 1881 , the Fédération Européennes de Gymnastique (FEG) was founded in Liège by Nicolas J. Cuperus. France , Belgium and the Netherlands are founding members . In 1921 the FEG became the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique. At this point in time, FIG has 16 members.

Although the International Olympic Committee approved the FEG for the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 , it did not take part in the Games. The gymnastics competitions take place under the responsibility of the Greek Organizing Committee. It was not until 1908 that the FEG officially took part in the Olympic Games for the first time.

The FEG organized its first own international competition in 1903 in Antwerp . The first official world championships in gymnastics but find the FIG in 1931 in Paris instead. Women are initially not allowed to participate in the world championships. From 1934 the FIG organized competitions for women.

In order to make the competitions fair, the first men's valuation rules are introduced in 1949. Today there is an extensive evaluation catalog for every discipline - with the exception of general gymnastics - the so-called Code de Pointage .

In order to bring gymnasts together beyond the competition, the FIG organized the first Gymnaestrada in Rotterdam in 1953 . From then on, this gymnastics festival takes place every four years at different locations.

In the following years, the FIG begins to represent other types of gymnastics in addition to apparatus gymnastics. The first world championships in rhythmic gymnastics were held in Budapest in 1963, and in 1995 the first world championships in aerobics were held in Paris. Since 1998 the FIG has also been the umbrella organization for trampoline gymnasts.

criticism

The FIG would like to become the international professional association for the sport of parkour . Parkour UK's managing director Eugene Minogue has filed a lawsuit with the International Court of Justice for the “wrongful appropriation and acquisition” of Parkour.
