The Vickers Viking was a single-engine flying boat made by the British manufacturer Vickers Ltd Aviation Department , which was developed for military purposes shortly after the First World War .
history
In December 1918, design work began on the second Vickers amphibious aircraft. The prototype was a five-seater double-decker with a pusher propeller and a Rolls-Royce Falcon engine. The second example, the Viking II, had a larger wingspan and a Rolls-Royce Eagle VIII engine.
The Type 54 Viking IV had a larger cabin and other improvements. Most of the models in this version received a Napier Lion engine. Two copies of the next version, the Viking V, were sold to the Royal Air Force and used in Iraq .
The last Viking amphibious aircraft were built in 1923, some of them by the Canadian subsidiary Canadian Vickers , which thus entered aircraft construction. An improved version of the Viking was the Vickers Vulture , from which the Vickers Vanellus emerged .
The name Viking was also used for the Vickers Viking after World War II .
