Viorica Daniela Silivaș-Harper (born May 9, 1972 in Deva , Hunedoara district ) is a former Romanian gymnast . She was a three-time Olympic champion .

Daniela Silivaș at the 1987 World Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam

Silivaș started gymnastics at the age of six and was extremely successful at an early age. In 1985 the Romanian Gymnastics Federation changed her year of birth from 1972 to 1970 so that she could be admitted to the 1985 World Gymnastics Championships . The fraud was suspected by some but could never be verified until Silivaș himself admitted it in 2002. She received a perfect mark of 10.0 on the balance beam and beat the reigning world champion Ecaterina Szabó . She soon became the leader in the Romanian women's gymnastics team.

At the age of 16, she took part in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul in six competitions and won a medal in each. She won the gold medal on the uneven bars (with a grade of 10), on the balance beam and in floor exercise. She won silver twice in individual and team competitions and came third in horse jumping.

Silivaș is also a seven-time world champion. She won a total of ten medals at the gymnastics world championships between 1985 and 1989 .

After the political change in 1989, the National Training Center in Deva closed, which led to the early end of her career.

She resigned in 1991 and has since lived in Atlanta , Georgia , in the United States , where she is currently pursuing a career as a gymnastics coach. In 2002 she was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame as the youngest athlete to date .
