Chellsie Memmel (born June 23, 1988 in West Allis , Wisconsin ) is an American gymnast . In 2005 she was the third American after Kim Zmeskal and Shannon Miller to become the all-around world champion. She also won world titles on the uneven bars and with the American team during her career . At the 2008 Olympics, she won silver with the team.

Life

Chellsie Memmel was born in 1988 in West Allis, Wisconsin, the eldest of three daughters of Andrew and Jeanelle Memmel. Her parents were both active gymnasts themselves and competed successfully for college teams. You have been running the M&M Gymnastics gymnastics school in New Berlin (Wisconsin) since 1992 .

Memmel started doing gymnastics as a toddler. She first trained in her parents' gymnastics school before switching to coach Jim Chudy when she was eight. Under Chudy's guidance, she made the leap to national level. As a twelve year old, she first appeared in the US championships.

International breakthrough and first setbacks (2003-2004)

Memmel celebrated her first international successes with the seniors at the Pan American Games in 2003 . Here she was initially only intended as a substitute gymnast. Due to injuries and illnesses, however, she moved up to the team and won five medals, including gold in the all-around competition and with the team. During the team final, she achieved the highest all-round rating of her team.

At the 2003 World Championships , Memmel achieved the final breakthrough. She not only became world champion with the team, but also won the uneven bars competition. Like her teammate Hollie Vise, she achieved 9,612 points on this device, so they had to share the place on the podium.

In the spring of 2004 Memmel broke her foot, so that she could not take part in important pre-Olympic competitions. Therefore, she was only nominated as a substitute gymnast for the Olympic Games in Athens. Since her colleagues were spared bad luck with injuries, Memmel did not appear in Athens, although she was fully resilient again.

After the Olympics, Memmel left her long-time coach Jim Chudy and has been coached by her father ever since.

Memmel returned to the international stage in November, where she won the gymnastics world cup on the uneven bars.

Comeback and renewed injuries (2005-2007)

At the 2005 World Championships , Memmel won the all-around competition with 37.824 points and relegated Nastia Liukin to second place with only a thousandth of a point ahead. There had never been a closer decision in gymnastics history. Memmel was only the third American to do this. She had to admit defeat to Liukin on the uneven bars and the balance beam and won silver.

At the 2006 World Championships , Memmel injured his shoulder during the team competition on the uneven bars, but continued the competition and won silver. Due to her shoulder injury, she was unable to participate in any further finals.

After shoulder surgery in November 2006, Memmel suffered foot and ankle injuries while training on the floor . In the following time Memmel hardly appeared in competitions. Although she was able to take part in a test competition for the Olympic Games in Beijing at the end of 2007 , injuries subsequently put her out of action again.

Olympic participation (2008)

In 2008 Memmel was able to qualify for the Olympic Games with a third place at the American Championships , but also had to contend with injuries in Beijing. During the second training session on the floor, she broke her ankle. Nevertheless, she did gymnastics in a team competition, but only on the uneven bars. With that she also lost the chance of an all-around medal.

After the Olympics (2009)

After the Olympic Games Memmel took on numerous obligations, for example she did gymnastics in the Tour of Gymnastics Superstars, which was very successful in the USA . Memmel had her first competition after the Olympic Games at the American Championships in 2009. Here, however, she only started on the balance beam.

Comeback (2020)

On July 31, 2020, Memmel announced her comeback on her YouTube channel.
