Maria Olaru

Maria Olaru , married Diaconu , (born June 4, 1982 in Fălticeni ) is a former Romanian artistic gymnast .

She started gymnastics in her hometown of Fălticeni at the age of seven. There her talent was discovered and she moved to Deva to the CSȘ Cetate. In 1996, Olaru took part for the first time in the European Gymnastics Championships , where she won silver in jumping and gold with the team.

At the 1999 World Gymnastics Championships , Olaru was double world champion. She won gold in the all-around competition and with the team and bronze in the jump. In 2000 she took part in the Olympic Games in Sydney, where she was Olympic champion with the team. She also won silver in the all- around competition behind her compatriot Simona Amânar . In the same year she was awarded the Order of Loyalty to the rank of commander.

After her resignation, Olaru worked as an assistant at the Western University of Timişoara . In 2014 she opened a gym in Bucharest . A year later she married the politician and member of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies Bogdan Diaconu . In 2016 she published the book Prețul aurului. Sinceritate incomodă ( The price of gold. Inconvenient truth ), in which she denounced the methods of Romanian gymnastics training like abuse.
