Anastasia "Nastia" Liukin (born October 30, 1989 in Moscow as Anastassija Valerjewna Ljukina , Russian Анастаси́я Вале́рьевна Лю́кина ) is a former Russian - US American gymnast .

Life

Anastasia Liukin was born in Moscow in 1989. Her parents, the gymnast Anna Kotschnewa and the gymnast Valeri Liukin , emigrated to the USA in 1992. Here Liukin's father and a partner opened the World Olympics Gymnastic Academy in Plano (Texas) in 1994 .

Due to her parents' coaching activity, Liukin spent a lot of time in gyms from an early age. Her talent was therefore recognized and promoted early on, although her parents were initially skeptical about a gymnastics career. Nevertheless, Liukin is still trained by her father in his gymnastics school. She is also supervised by the choreographer Natalya Marakova.

Liukin made his first international appearances in 2002 with the juniors. She has been taking part in senior competitions since 2005. In addition to training 36 hours a week, divided into two training units a day, Liukin has been studying at the private Southern Methodist University in Dallas since autumn 2007 .

Liukin made a brief appearance in the 2006 movie Rebel in Sneakers .

successes

Liukin is multiple US champion. In 2005 she was world champion on the uneven bars and balance beam as well as a silver medalist on the floor and in the individual all-around. At the 2006 World Championships she won silver with the team and individually on the uneven bars. She was able to repeat winning the silver medal on the uneven bars in 2007, and in that year she also became world champion in the team competition and on the balance beam.

At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 Liukin was able to win the silver medal in the team finals with the US team. In the individual all- around final , she relegated Shawn Johnson and Yang Yilin to places two and three and became Olympic champion. On the ground it was enough for a bronze medal. On the uneven bars, Liukin's practice was awarded the same number of points as the Chinese He Kexin , but due to a tie-break rule, she only won silver. Without this rule, which was introduced for the Olympic Games, both gymnasts would have won a gold medal. On the last day of the gymnastics competition, Liukin finally won her third Olympic silver medal on the balance beam.

After the Olympics, Liukin continued her athletic career with the aim of participating in the London 2012 Olympics. At the American Championships in 2009 Liukin only appeared on the balance beam and was fifth. After the American championships, Liukin declared that he wanted to take a break from sport in order to be able to pursue the demands of her sponsors and to be able to devote himself to voluntary work. As a result, she was also not a member of the US team at the 2009 World Championships in London. After a comeback at the Visa Championships 2012, she announced her resignation. She has been studying in New York since January 2013. In 2015, Liukin took part in the 20th season of the US dance show Dancing with the Stars and took 4th place with her dance partner Derek Hough.
