Andreea Mădălina Răducan (born September 30, 1983 in Bârlad ) is a former Romanian artistic gymnast . She was world champion several times and won the team all-round competition with the Romanian team at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. Also in Sydney she was Olympic champion in the individual all-around competition, but had to surrender this medal due to a doping offense .

Life

Răducan started gymnastics at the age of four. In 1999 she was able to win a title at international championships for the first time. She became world champion with the team and on the ground in Tianjin and won silver on the balance beam .

At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney Răducan also won the gold medal with the Romanian team. In addition, she won the individual all-around event , but had to surrender the medal again because she tested positive for the banned stimulant pseudoephedrine after winning the individual all-around event . Răducan stated, however, that he unknowingly took the remedy. A team doctor had given her the drug because of a cold. This doctor was banned from the Olympic Games up to and including 2004. There were demonstrations in Romania in which the population expressed their solidarity with Răducan. Răducan was allowed to keep her team gold medal because she had not been tested after this competition. The silver medal at the jump also remained in her possession, since the doping test after this competition was negative. In the same year she was awarded the Order of Loyalty to the rank of commander.

In 2001 Răducan returned to the international stage, but for the sake of safety and health, dispensed with some acrobatic elements in their exercises. Nevertheless, she was once again world champion with the Romanian team. In addition, she won the title on the balance beam and floor at the World Championships in Ghent. However, she did not succeed in winning the individual all-around competition like in Sydney. In this competition she was third. In 2002 Răducan took part again in the World Championships before ending her athletic career in 2003 to focus on her school education and a career in television.

After her active career, Răducan worked for Romanian television and for the foundation of the National Olympic Committee of Romania. She is currently studying at the University of Bucharest with the aim of obtaining a master's degree in journalism. In December 2010, her autobiography "Reversul medaliei" was published by the Cărțile Tango publishing house. In 2017 Răducan was elected President of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation.
