The University of Bucharest ( Romanian Universitatea din Bucureşti ) was founded in 1694 by Constantin Brâncoveanu as the Academy of Saint Sava ( Bucharest ), initially with Greek-language theology and philosophy lessons ; Alexandru Ipsilanti extended the lectures in 1776 in Latin, French and Italian. In the 19th century, the university was expanded to include the faculties of medicine , pharmacy , law , natural sciences and literature . The university is now a state university with over 30,000 students, 1,477 professors and 19 faculties. Its main building is located on University Square (Piața Universității) in the city center. The rector of the university is Mircea Dumitru.
