history

The college was opened in June 1863 by a decree by Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza as a conservatory for music and declamation under the direction of the composer Alexandru Flechtenmacher . In 1931, thanks to the efforts of composer George Enescu, the Conservatory became a royal academy under the auspices of Charles II . In 1950, at the time of communism, the academy became a conservatory again, named after the composer Ciprian Porumbescu . At the same time, the drama department was transformed into its own theater institute and named after the writer Ion Luca Caragiale . From 1990 to 1998 the university was called the Bucharest Music Academy , then the Bucharest University of Music . In 2001, twelve years after the Romanian Revolution , the Romanian government granted the university the status of a national university.
