Myriam Marbe

Myriam Marbe (born April 9, 1931 in Bucharest ; † December 25, 1997 there) was a Romanian pianist and composer.

Life

Marbe received her first piano lessons from her mother, who was a pianist. From 1944 to 1954 she was a piano student of Florica Musicescu and Silvia Capatâna and composition student of Leon Klepper and Mihail Jora at the Bucharest Music Academy . From 1953 to 1965 she was a film editor at the Casa de filme in Bucharest. From 1954 to 1988 she taught counterpoint and composition at the Bucharest University of Music. Since she refused to join the Communist Party, she was denied a professorship. Her students included u. a. Violeta Dinescu .

Between 1968 and 1972 she was able to take part in the Darmstadt summer courses three times , and in 1971 at the Festival for Contemporary Music in Royan . From 1989 to 1990 she received a work grant from the city of Mannheim .

In addition to her work as a composer, Marbe also worked as a publicist and musicologist. She co-authored a monograph on George Enescu and wrote essays and analyzes that were critical of style.

The estate of Myriam Marbes is kept at the Sophie Drinker Institute for Musicological Women and Gender Studies in Bremen .
