Mihail Jora (born August 14, 1891 in Roman ; † May 10, 1971 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian composer .

Life

Jora received his first musical training from his mother, who was a graduate of the Dresden Conservatory. In the family circle he also met George Enescu , who was married to Jora's cousin, Maruca Cantacuzino. Jora studied law at the University of Jassy , which he graduated in 1912, and attended the Conservatory of Sofia Teodoreanu in Jassy. From 1912 to 1914 he went to the Royal Conservatory in Leipzig to study with Max Reger and Robert Teichmüller . When the First World War broke out, he became an officer in the Romanian Army and lost a leg in October 1916.

After the war he continued his musical training in Paris with Florent Schmitt . In 1924 he made his debut in Vienna with the compositions Joujoux pour Ma Dame op. 7 and Jüdischer Marsch op. 8 , which were performed by his compatriot Filip Lazăr and were printed in the Universal Edition by Emil Hertzka the following year . Between 1929 and 1962 he was professor at the Conservatory of Bucharest , with political interruptions , of which he was temporarily rector from 1941, and from 1928 to 1933 he was program director at the radio in Bucharest.

In 1944 he became vice-president of the Society of Romanian Composers , but soon came under criticism of the communist government on charges of formalism . He had additional difficulties because his wife was a sister of the Romanian politician in exile Grigore Gafencu . In 1953 he submitted to the party doctrine, was accepted back into the composers' association, received composition commissions and was awarded a state prize. In 1955 he was accepted into the Romanian Academy .

He composed four ballets , a symphony , two orchestral suites (including Moldavian Landscapes , 1924), chamber music works, piano works, choral music and songs .

The orchestra Orchestra Filarmonică Mihail Jora din Bacău has been named after him since 1991, as well as the Studioul de concerte "Mihail Jora" (better known as Sala Radio ), the concert hall of the Orchestra Națională Radio in Bucharest.
