Nicolae Herlea

Nicolae Herlea (actually Nicolae Herle ; born August 28, 1927 in Bucharest ; † February 24, 2014 in Frankfurt am Main ) was an opera singer ( baritone ) of German-Romanian origin. He celebrated successes on national and international opera stages, especially in the Italian repertoire and in the role of Figaro in the Barber of Seville by Gioachino Rossini , which he sang over 550 times during his career. Occasionally, Herlea has been compared to Enrico Caruso .

Life

He studied at the Conservatory in Bucharest with Aurelius Costescu-Duca, and later at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome with Giorgio Favaretto.

In 1951 he won first prizes at international singing competitions in Geneva, Prague and Brussels. He made his stage debut in 1950 as Silvio in Pagliacci at the Opera Națională Bucureşti , where he was engaged as a soloist until his retirement in 1986. From 1958 he also appeared frequently abroad, especially at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. There were also numerous guest appearances at the London Royal Opera House (1961), La Scala in Milan (1963) and the Metropolitan Opera in New York (1964–1967), at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, ​​the Berlin State Opera and the Vienna State Opera , at the Salzburg Festival , La Monnaie in Brussels and in the opera houses of Prague and Budapest .

In addition, Herlea has released studio recordings of Der Barbier von Sevilla , Lucia di Lammermoor , Rigoletto , La traviata , La forza del destino , Cavalleria rusticana , Pagliacci and Tosca , on labels such as Supraphon, Intercord Germany, Electrecord and he has won other national and international awards international prices. Since his retirement he has given master classes at the Bucharest University of Music and was president of the jury of the "Hariclea Darclée", an international singing competition in Brăila . He was honored as an “artist of the people” and awarded the star of Romania . Herlea died on February 24, 2014 with his family in Frankfurt am Main .
