The building of the Hungarian State Opera ( Hungarian : Magyar Állami Operaház ) is one of the most magnificent examples of neo-Renaissance architecture in the Pest district of the Hungarian capital Budapest . It can be found in VI. District (Terézváros) at Andrássy út 22.

The opera house was built between 1875 and 1884 and financed by the city of Budapest and Emperor Franz Joseph I. The Hungarian Royal Opera House, as it was then called, was ceremoniously opened on September 27, 1884. The building is very richly decorated with baroque elements, with numerous ornaments , paintings and sculptures. Particularly noteworthy are the murals in the staircases and the auditorium of the opera, which were made by Bertalan Székely , Mór Than and Károly Lotz . The Budapest Opera is considered to be one of the masterpieces by Miklós Ybl and one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world.

In front of the building is a statue of Ferenc Erkel , the composer of the Hungarian national anthem , and Franz Liszt , both created by Alajos Stróbl .

Ferenc Erkel was the first director of the opera, but the important Austrian composer Gustav Mahler also held the position of director here from 1888 to 1891. Even Puccini personally staged the premieres of his operas here twice.

Otto Klemperer , Sergio Failoni and Lamberto Gardelli are among the most important conductors at the State Opera .

The second venue of the Hungarian State Opera is the Erkel Theater .

Others

Opera is also the station name on Line 1 of the Budapest Metro .

Karl Pauker , the commandant of Stalin's bodyguard, worked as a hairdresser at the Budapest Opera for some time at the beginning of the 20th century.

The Italian horror film director Dario Argento used the opera to a large extent for his film The Phantom of the Opera . However, the catacomb shots contained therein are not taken from that, but - as can be seen in the end credits of the film - were shot in the Pertosa Carves, Salerno.
