Lamberto Gardelli (born November 8, 1915 in Venice , † July 17, 1998 in Munich ) was an Italian conductor .

Life

Gardelli studied with Amilcare Zanella and Adriano Ariani . He then moved to the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, where he a. a. graduated from Goffredo Petrassi and Alessandro Bustini .

Lamberto Gardelli began working as Tullio Serafin's assistant and conducted various Italian orchestras during this time. As an opera conductor he made his debut in Rome in 1944 with Verdi's La traviata . From 1946 to 1955 he was employed as a permanent conductor at the Stockholm Opera. He then directed the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1955 to 1961 , and then the Budapest Opera until 1965 . After years of changing activities, he directed the Bern Opera from 1978 to 1984 and the Munich Radio Orchestra from 1982 to 1985 . He then took over the direction of the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra for a second time from 1986 to 1989.

Lamberto Gardelli was also a popular guest conductor at the Met and the Glyndebourne Festival, particularly in the 1960s. His many opera recordings on vinyl are legendary, with particular engagement for lesser-known works of Italian opera literature.

He was seldom active as a concert conductor, although such a well-known work as Gottfried von Einems 4th Symphony was premiered by him. His own operas and orchestral works, on the other hand, did not acquire any lasting significance for the repertoire.
