The Stadttheater Bern at Kornhausplatz 20 in Bern houses a three-part stage for opera , drama and ballet .

Today's house has existed since 1903. At the opening, Tannhäuser was performed by Richard Wagner , introduced by a ceremony by Joseph Victor Widmann , in which Mrs. Berna appeared as an allegorical figure alongside Apollo and the Muses .

Since 2012, the Bern City Theater has been part of the new institution «Konzert Theater Bern», which includes the Bern Symphony Orchestra as well as the City Theater. In this form, it is a unique organizational model and four-branch house for Switzerland .

building

After an architectural competition for a new building on the square of the old riding school had already been unsatisfactory in 1897, the neo-baroque building - financed by the Berner Stadt-Theater corporation founded in 1896 - was built by the architect René von Wurstemberger from 1901 and opened on September 25, 1903. The city theater replaced the Hôtel de Musique on Theaterplatz, which had previously been used for a century and now houses the Du Théâtre restaurant .

On October 19, 1903, the shareholders of the stock corporation decided to sell the theater to the city of Bern; the company was not finally liquidated until April 1917.

Directors

Contemporary history

After internal quarrels between Intendant Märki and Drama Director Cihan Inan because of a dispute regarding roles, the conflict was resolved by the resignation of the Intendant in July 2018. In order to be able to "bring calm and continuity into the house", the Board of Trustees offered Inan a contract extension for two years. The theater director extended under the new circumstances.
