Helga Dernesch
Helga Dernesch (born February 3, 1939 in Vienna ) is an Austrian opera singer ( dramatic soprano ).
Life
Helga Dernesch studied at the conservatory in her hometown, sang 1961–1963 in Bern , 1964 and 1965 in Wiesbaden , 1966–1969 in Cologne , appeared for the first time in 1965 at the Bayreuth Festival (as Wellgunde im Ring ), and in 1969 for the first time Salzburg Easter Festival . Since then she has given guest performances all over the world (Metropolitan Opera, Bavarian State Opera, and many more). After a vocal crisis in the 1970s, Dernesch, on the advice of the conductor Christoph von Dohnányi, changed her subject to the dramatic character field and was thus able to extend her career by singing roles such as Clytemnestra, Herodias and Nurse. She was married to the Austrian tenor Werner Krenn (* 1943).
Helga Dernesch was Herbert von Karajan's favorite interpreter at the end of the 1960s , and she recorded Siegfried , Götterdämmerung , Tristan and Isolde and Fidelio , each in the main female roles. In these she could not compete with her colleague Birgit Nilsson in terms of strength and steel , but her great emotional expressiveness and her good singing technique came into their own. Another highlight of their discography is the "Tannhäuser" directed by Georg Solti .
