history
The current municipality is Altsiedelland ; There are various Bronze Age and Iron Age sites, Roman manors ( villae rusticae ) and early medieval burial grounds .
Köniz was first mentioned in 1011 as In villa Chunicis [court of Cuno or Cunizo]. Today's Reformed parish church (formerly Sankt Peter and Paul ) dates back to around 1100 in its oldest upright parts. Previous buildings are to be assumed, archaeological excavations are missing so far.
The forecast according to the church on a foundation of the Burgundian king Rudolf II. And his wife Bertha to go back [date of the marriage] 922-937 [death of Rudolf]. The parish included not only today's municipality, but also the area of the future city of Bern, around 5 km away . In 1191 it became the parish church of the newly founded town until it was raised to a separate parish in 1276.
Since sources of unused time, probably, was in the mid-12th century. At the church one pin of the Augustinian Canons , which in 1226 by King Henry VII. , The son and deputy of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II. , The German Order was handed over. The order established a commander in the parish church , which belonged to the Swabian-Alsace-Burgundy Ballei , as well as a branch in Bern. One of the friars served as pastor. With the establishment of the parish of Bern, the local branch was raised to an independent commander, the head of which was the respective Bernese city pastor .
The Kommende Köniz was secularized in 1528 on the occasion of the Bernese Reformation , but returned to the order in 1552 under pressure from the Catholic cantons . In 1729 the order sold the Kommende to Bern. A bailiwick was established, which existed until the fall of Old Bern in 1798. The political municipality of Köniz in its current form was created in 1846 and corresponds to the area of the former parish .
In 1920 the residents' community assembly was replaced by a community parliament, the large municipal council . At the beginning this comprised 30 seats, since 1934 there have been 40. A full-time municipal council was also introduced in 1934 and the number of seats in the municipal council (government) was reduced from 13 to 11. The municipal council, which had already been reduced to 7 seats, was reduced in 2010 to today's 5 full-time members.
In 2012, Köniz was awarded the Wakker Prize of the Swiss Homeland Security (SHS).
