Otterbach was mentioned as Ottirbach as early as 1236 .

From 1399 or later the community belonged to the Bernese office of Röthenbach, from 1529 a lower court to the Landvogtei Signau, a high court to the district court Konolfingen, from 1798 to the district of Steffisburg, from 1803 to the Oberamt Konolfingen, and ecclesiastically to Oberdiessbach, from 1839 to the helper and from 1860 to the parish Kurzenberg. The community and Bauernsame of Otterbach was organized as a community of property from at least 1498, received Allmend and Wald von Schloss Signau as fiefdom in 1598. In 1645, Otterbach was the first community on Kurzenberg to divide their communally grazed Allmend to the farms due to overuse. In 1834 Otterbach was constituted as a community of residents, until in 1945 it merged as the smallest and poorest community on the Kurzenberg with Ausserbirrmoos and Innerbirrmoos to form the community of Linden.

In 1764 Otterbach had 168 inhabitants. In 1850 there were 346, 1900 303 and 1941 310.
