The area of the 3.5 km² former municipal area covers a section of the hill country east of the Aare valley between Bern and Thun. The main part of the area is taken up by the former swampy lowlands of the Talimoos ( 735  m above sea level ) and the Gwattmoos , which are separated from the Aare valley by the bar of the lateral moraine. The Gwattberg rises on the eastern edge of the Talimoos . To the south the municipality extends to the forest ridge of the Hürnberg , on which with 910  m above sea level. M. the highest point of Schlosswil is reached. The smaller western part of the municipality is located in a hollow in the headwaters of the Richigenbach , a source creek of the Worblen. history

The area around Schlosswil was inhabited very early. Some remains of the wall, various finds and graves point to a Roman settlement, possibly a military base, on the Roman road from the Aare valley to the Emmental.

The first written mention of the place took place in 1146 under the name Wilare . The names Wilere (1239), Wiler (1242) and Wyle (1345) appeared later . The place name goes back to the Old High German word wilari (small village, hamlet, single farm).

Wil Castle and surroundings

Since it was first mentioned, Wil was the center of the Wil rule. After the family of the Barons von Wiler died out at the beginning of the 14th century, the rule was divided into two parts. One part passed through a marriage to the Senn von Münsingen family, the other to a Bernese noble family. The sovereignty of the area was initially held by the Counts of Kyburg , and since 1406 by the city of Bern. The high level of jurisdiction was exercised by the Konolfingen Regional Court. In 1508 both parts of the former rule were reunited. In addition to Wil, the rulership also included Grosshöchstetten, Gysenstein and Oberhünigen. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Schlosswil belonged to the Höchstetten district during the Helvetic period and from 1803 to the Konolfingen district authority, which was given the status of an official district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831.

Since the 19th century, the political community of Wil has included the actual village with the castle and, as an exclave , Oberhünigen , located far to the southeast across the Chise Valley . With effect from January 1, 1903, the community name was changed to make it easier to distinguish it from other communities of the same name in Schlosswil . The Oberhünigen exclave was separated from Schlosswil on January 1, 1980 and declared an independent community.

On November 14, 2014, the municipal council of Schlosswils announced in a joint declaration with the municipal council of Grosshöchstetten that future forms of cooperation should be examined. The next information would be given in spring 2015.

On December 4, 2015, Markus Geist was elected as the new mayor. He replaces Doris Reber, who did not run for re-election.

On September 24, 2017, the municipalities of Schlosswil and Grosshöchstetten approved a merger, which is to be implemented on January 1, 2018. Schlosswil voted yes with 70% with a participation of 69%, Grosshöchstetten with 85% with a participation of 55%.

economy

Agriculture , dairy farming and cattle breeding still play an important role in the income structure of the population today . Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector, including in companies in the electrical industry, timber construction and horticulture. The district administration stationed in the castle is also an important employer in the village. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many employees are therefore commuters who work mainly in the larger towns in the area and in the agglomeration of Bern.

traffic

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is about 1 km from the main road from Bern to Langnau im Emmental . The closest connection to the A6 motorway (Bern-Thun) is around 9 km from the town center. Schlosswil is connected to the public transport network through a postbus course between Worb and Grosshöchstetten.

Wil Castle stands on the moraine wall with its keep from the 12th century that can be seen from afar. It housed the administrative administration of the Konolfingen district, which existed until 2010. The parish church of Schlosswil was probably donated by the barons of Wiler at the beginning of the 13th century. In the 17th century the church was redesigned. It has important heraldic disks and polished disks from around the middle of the 18th century. The late Gothic rectory was built in 1548 and rebuilt in the 18th century. Various characteristic farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center.
