The village was first mentioned in a document in 1239 as a country seat of Rudolf von Alwandingen. In the 16th century Alwandingen became Allmendingen. On September 17, 1946, Winston Churchill visited Allmendingen Castle.
Until the end of 1992 Allmendingen was part of the political municipality Rubigen together with Rubigen and Trimstein and only became an independent municipality from January 1, 1993.
On July 20, 1922, the Allmendingen stop was opened on the Bern – Thun railway line . This, however, was away from the settlement and was not very frequented. The stop was canceled when the timetable changed in 1982. Since then, the community has been served by a regional bus line from Bern to Solothurn .
