Kirchdorf is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland .

geography

Kirchdorf lies at 611  m above sea level. M. , 10 km northwest of the city of Thun (air line). The clustered village extends in an elevated and panoramic location on the southern foothills of the Belpberg between the valley plains of the Gürbe in the west and the Aare in the east, south of the Gerzensee .

The area of the 6.1 km² municipal area comprises a section of the broad Aare valley between Bern and Thun. The main part of the area is taken up by the undulating plateau of the southern Belpberg, which was shaped by the ice age Aar glacier. In a slight depression north of the village is the Gerzensee, the southern half of which belongs to Kirchdorf. The 500 m wide, flat valley basin of the Limpach , a former swamp area, begins south of the village . To the east, the municipal ban extends into the Stöckliwald ( 600  m above sea level ) and in a narrow corner over the Gestelen ( 600  m above sea level ) down to the Aare.

To the west of the plateau near Kirchdorf are the heights of Leen ( 651  m above sea level ) and Taan (at 663  m above sea level, the highest elevation in the community). These heights drop almost 100 m to the west with a wooded steep slope to the Gürbetal . Part of the agriculturally intensively used plain of the 1.5 km wide central Gürbe valley also belongs to Kirchdorf. In 1997, 10% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 18% for forests and woodlands and 70% for agriculture; just over 2% was unproductive land.

The hamlets and farm groups Leen ( 625  m above sea level ), Büttstein ( 620  m above sea level ) west of the village, Stockeren ( 590  m above sea level ) on the edge of the Limpach valley and some individual farms belong to Kirchdorf . Neighboring communities of Kirchdorf are Gerzensee , Wichtrach , Jaberg , Uttigen , Kienersrüti , Burgistein , Thurnen .

population

With 1,843 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Kirchdorf is one of the smaller communities in the canton of Bern. 96.7% of the residents speak German, 1.2% speak French and 0.4% speak Romansh (as of 2000). The population of Kirchdorf was 679 in 1850 and 605 in 1900. In the course of the 20th century, the population decreased to 535 people by 1960. Since then, the population has increased significantly again.

economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Kirchdorf was primarily an agricultural village. Even today, arable farming , vegetable growing in the Gürbetal as well as dairy farming and cattle breeding have an important place in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. In Kirchdorf today there are construction, electrical, wood processing and a car company represented. At the height east of the Limpach valley, the largest gravel pits in the canton are exploited; some are already in the renaturation phase. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the larger towns in the area and in the Bern or Thun area.

politics

The voting shares of the parties in the 2015 National Council elections were: SVP 44.7%, SP 12.5%, BDP 12.2%, glp 6.7%, GPS 6.2%, FDP 5.9%, EDU 4.1 %, EVP 3.7%, CVP 1.9%.

traffic

The community is well developed in terms of transport, although it is located away from the larger thoroughfares on a connecting road from Mühlethurnen to Kiesen . The closest connection to the A6 motorway (Bern-Thun) is around 4 km from the town center. The village is connected to the public transport network through the PostBus courses, which serve the routes from Belp to Kirchdorf and from Münsingen to Kirchdorf.

history

The municipality of Kirchdorf was settled early, which was proven by the finds of graves from the Latène period . One of the grave goods was an iron sword, which is now exhibited in the Bern Historical Museum . There was an earth castle in the Gestelenwald.

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1228 under the name Chilthorf . Later the names Kyltorf (1250), Chilchtorf (1260), Kiltorf (1280), Kiltdorff (1605) and Kirchdorf (1838) appeared. The village is thought to have been laid out by the Alemanni in the 7th century .

In the Middle Ages, the area of today's church village was split up into numerous small estates, some of which belonged to Bernese families and some to religious institutions ( Interlaken Abbey , Lower Hospital Bern ). It was not until 1508 that the area around Kirchdorf was united under Jakob von Wattenwyl to one rule. The Kirchdorf lower court came to the city of Bern in 1645 and was raised to a Venner court in the Seftigen district court. Various branches of industry (saddlery, tanneries, sawmills, mills) developed in Kirchdorf early on, because the village was situated on an important link between the Emmental and the Schwarzenburgerland . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Kirchdorf belonged to the Seftigen district during the Helvetic Republic and from 1803 to the Seftigen District Office , which received the status of an official district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831 .

On January 1, 2018 , Kirchdorf merged with the former municipalities of Gelterfingen , Mühledorf and Noflen to form the new municipality of Kirchdorf.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Kirchdorf
Blazon : Diagonally cut divided by red and silver, covered with a right-angled double wavy bar of silver and blue in alternating colors. »
Justification of the coat of arms: Silver and red are already used as colors in the coats of arms of the merged municipalities of Gelterfingen, Kirchdorf, Mühledorf and Noflen. The number four (four parishes) is recorded in a shield division and bars. The wave bar stands for the Aare and Gürbe waters, which shape the landscape.

Attractions

The Ursus Church, which was already mentioned in the context of the first mention of the village, was given its present shape when it was rebuilt from 1872 to 1874; the previous building was destroyed by fire. The slightly raised church shows neo-Gothic styles and a high pointed helmet. It is considered the symbol of the village and can be seen from afar.

Kirchdorf has a place of national importance that is worth protecting. In the old town center, the numerous characteristic houses from the 17th to 19th centuries form a unit. Particularly noteworthy are the cage tower from the 17th century with the municipal archive, the former magistrate's granary (built around 1700) and the Schlössli (1646) and Winkel (1668) manors. The multi-purpose building Dorfträff is part of modern architecture.

The Gerzensee, north of the village, with its unspoilt banks forms a nature reserve and is only accessible in a few places.
