The place name goes back to the Old High German personal name Hutilo and therefore means for the people of Hutilo .

Since the Middle Ages , Häutligen has belonged to various lords, including the Senn von Münsingen family. The sovereignty of the area passed from the Counts of Kyburg to Bern in 1406 , and from then on Häutligen was subordinate to the Konolfingen Regional Court. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the village belonged to the Höchstetten district during the Helvetic period and from 1803 to the Konolfingen Oberamt, which received the status of an official district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831.
