The place was first mentioned in a document as early as 1006 under the name Oponlengis . Later the names Opelingen (1146), Oppelingen (1234), Oplingen (1250) and Opplingen (1357) appeared. The place name goes back to the Old High German personal name Oppilo and therefore means for the people of Oppilo .

In the Middle Ages, there was an earth castle on the Oppligenbergli , of which some walls are still visible today. Oppligen initially belonged to the Barons von Kien, who left the village to the Interlaken Monastery in the 13th century . At the end of the 14th century, Oppligen came under Bern suzerainty. The high level of jurisdiction lay with the Konolfingen Regional Court. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the village belonged to the Steffisburg district during the Helvetic Republic and from 1803 to the Konolfingen Oberamt, which received the status of an official district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831. Oppligen does not have its own church; it belongs to the Wichtrach parish.
