Even today, arable and vegetable growing (especially cabbage planting) in the Gürbetal, as well as dairy farming and cattle breeding on the slopes, have an important role in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. In Rümligen today there are companies in the building trade, measuring technology and a wooden sledge factory. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the agglomeration of Bern or in the Thun area.

The community is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the main road from Bern through the Gürbetal to Thun , from which a road branches off via Riggisberg into the Schwarzenburgerland. Rümligen is connected to the public transport network through the Postbus course , which runs the route from Toffen train station to Riggisberg .

history

The municipality of Rümligen was settled early on, there was a watchtower here in Roman times . The first written mention of the place took place in 1076 under the name Rumelinga . Later the names Rumelingen (1109), Rumilenges (1180), Rümlingen (1240), Rumilingen (1254) and Rummelingen (1327) appeared. The place name goes back to the Old High German personal name Rumilo and therefore means for the people of Rumilo .

In the High Middle Ages , Rümligen was the focus of the once important rule of the Barons of Rümligen, who also founded the Rüeggisberg Monastery . In the 13th century, the barons allied with Bern. Due to high debt, the castle and the manor were sold in 1515 and then changed hands several times (families Schütz, von Erlach, von Wattenwyl and Frisching). Under the rule of Bern, Rümligen was assigned to the Seftigen district court. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the village belonged to the Seftigen district during the Helvetic period and from 1803 to the Seftigen district, which received the status of an official district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831.
