March shooting
On the first Sunday in March, the Neueneggschiessen (or March Shooting), launched by the city of Bern's sniper club, takes place. Together with the gray wood shooting, it is one of the two historical shooting events in the canton of Bern that commemorate the French invasion of 1798 and the associated demise of old Bern. The event has existed since 1913 and is attended by shooting clubs from all over Switzerland.
The shooting itself is preceded by the ceremony in honor of the 135 dead in the battle near Neuenegg. After a sermon on the memorial accompanied by the Sternenberg music society and the men's choir, the winning group from the previous year, appearing as an honorary formation in historical uniform, fired three shots "into the cool grave". Afterwards, the parade of shooters and guests of honor goes to the village square, from where the actual shooting begins. However, the field shooting range is not located in the municipality, but on the opposite side of the scythe in Schrötern, near the Sense Bridge shooting range. The shooting takes place in groups of 8 people at a distance of 120 m.
