The Wander AG (officially: "WANDER AG") is a day to Associated British Foods belonging food producer based in Neuenegg ( Canton of Berne , Switzerland ). The company employs around 300 people in Switzerland. Well-known product is Ovaltine .

history

In 1865 Georg Wander opened a "chemical, technical and analytical" laboratory in the old town of Bern . His son Albert Wander took over the company in 1897. In 1904, the production of the malt drink Ovomaltine was started. Two years later the first sales depots opened in Italy and England. In 1908 the sole proprietorship was transformed into a stock corporation . In 1913, the first Ovaltine production facility outside of Switzerland was built in Kings Langley ( Great Britain ). In 1927 the Swiss production site was relocated from Bern to Neuenegg. A new Ovaltine production facility was opened in Neuenegg in 1997 and has been producing throughout Europe since 2002.

Wander AG was taken over by Sandoz in 1967 and sold to Associated British Foods in 2002.

Products

In addition to Ovaltine products, Wander AG also manufactures the first isotonic drink on the market, Isostar , as well as the Caotina chocolate drink powder , the Jemalt dietary supplement and protein bars for endurance sports.

Trivia

In 1958, the chemists Hunziker, Smutz and Eichenberger synthesized a substance called clozapine at Wander AG in Bern as part of a screening of around 2000 substances for new antidepressants . In 1960 the substance was patented and from 1962 the first tests on people with the new "antidepressant" took place; However, since these were not very successful, the substance was tested from 1966 on people with chronic-productive schizophrenia , where the antipsychotic effect was noticeable; In 1972 clozapine came onto the market under the trade name Leponex . The tram station of the Bern tram at the former Bern headquarters continues to be called "Wander".
