history
The first written mention of Meikirch comes from 1263, when a family "de Moechilchun" was mentioned in a land register as the owner of houses and estates in Bern and the surrounding area. The name "Mönch-Kilchen" refers to the Frienisberg monastery , founded in 1131 , to whose property most of the farms and their residents belonged as servants . After the monastery left Wahlendorf in 1380 and Meikirch Bern 100 years later, the citizens were able to buy their way out. The church, which is believed to have originated in the 7th or 8th century, stands on the remains of a Roman villa that was discovered during excavations in 1978. The hall house with annex was built around 100 AD and was built in the Tuscan style . The wall paintings and bricks found were carefully salvaged and documented by the archaeological service. A stamped brick is on display in the Müngerhaus near the church. During these excavations, Celtic graves from the time after the Great Migration were found inside the church , which were dated to the 7th and 8th centuries based on the grave goods. Another important find was made in 1851 in a burial mound south of Grächwil. The 60 centimeter bronze vase "Hydra" is now a showpiece of the prehistory collection of the Historical Museum in Bern.
