Ostermundigen ( Bern German Oschtermundige [ˌɔʃtərˈmʊndɪgə] , also abbreviated Mundige [mʊndɪgə] ) is a municipality and the capital of the administrative district Bern-Mittelland of the Swiss canton of Bern .
geography
Ostermundigen is a municipality in the Bern agglomeration and is located east of Bern at the foot of the Ostermundigenberg.
history
Ostermundigen is first mentioned in a document in 1239 in the phrase Chonradus laicus de Osturmundingin . The place name is a primary settlement name, formed with the Old High German male personal name Ostermund, extended by the affiliation suffix -ingen ; "Ostermundigen" originally meant "among the people of Ostermund".
Ostermundigen has only been an independent municipality since the split from Bolligen in 1983, before it was just a so-called quarter municipality of Bolligen. In the last few decades the former wood community has become a typical agglomeration community with a wide range of offers.
Ostermundigen has had a town partnership with Löhnberg an der Lahn, Germany, since 1979 .
politics
The municipal council is the executive branch of Ostermundigen. It has seven members. With the exception of the mayor, the councils work part-time. The municipal council is elected every four years using the proportional system (at the same time as the large municipal council). The mayor is elected by majority vote.
The large municipal council is the legislature of Ostermundigen. It has 40 members and is elected every four years using the proportional representation system . The graphic on the left shows the current distribution of seats in the City Council (as of January 2017).
