Intersport ( proper spelling : INTERSPORT ) is the largest medium-sized group in the global sports retail trade. Under the umbrella of IIC-Intersport International Corporation GmbH , the purchasing and management company of the Intersport Group, 5,562 locations in 56 countries (including The Athlete's Foot) are united. These generated sales of EUR 11.6 billion in 2018.

history

The IIC-Intersport International Corporation was founded in 1968 by ten national purchasing associations. The founding members are Belgium , Denmark , Germany , France , Italy , the Netherlands , Norway , Austria , Sweden and Switzerland . Over the years, other, mainly European, associations have joined them. The Intersport logo was revised in 2018.

At the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich , Intersport was awarded the management of the official Olympic sports shop for the first time by the IOC . After that, Intersport was the official sports shop operator at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck and the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow .

In 2006, Intersport signed an agreement with UEFA under which Intersport became the sports shop operator for the 2008 European Football Championship for the sale of licensed products in 20 countries .

Intersport was also the official sports shop operator for the 2010 World Cup and performed this task during the 2011 Women's World Cup in Germany and the 2012 European Football Championship in Poland and Ukraine .

Germany

Intersport Deutschland eG, founded in 1956 by 15 sports retailers and based in Heilbronn, is the largest national association within the Intersport Group. It has more than 900 members who together operate around 1,500 specialist shops. In 2018, they achieved sales of 2.85 billion euros. The largest members in the German cooperative are Otto , Sportscheck , Breuninger , Wöhrl , Engelhorn Sports , Sporthaus Schuster and the Sport Voswinkel chain of stores, which is directly owned by Intersport's headquarters and has around 1,200 employees in 74 stores, for which bankruptcy was filed in April 2019.

Since 2013, the German and Austrian INTERSPORT have formed a five-country network together with the markets in Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In this association, more than 1,800 stores generate a total of 3.53 billion euros (2018) in sales. INTERSPORT Germany represents the largest market within this group.

Austria

The Intersport Austria group is Austria's largest sports retail organization and also includes the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. More than 100 dealers in Austria with 3,600 employees operate over 280 sports shops with a sales area of ​​around 180,000 square meters. In 2018 INTERSPORT had a turnover of 580 million euros.

Switzerland

In contrast to Germany and Austria, Intersport is not organized as a cooperative association in Switzerland, but is operated by the public limited company Intersport PSC Holding AG , based in Ostermundigen . The registered shares are traded on the OTC -X trading platform of the Berner Kantonalbank . The corporation is a franchise partner of the IIC-Intersport International Corporation GmbH and holds 7.7% of the shares in this company. In 2014/2015 it achieved sales of 161.8 million francs with its 307 sales outlets and has 221 franchise and purchasing partners.
