The 14th Men's Handball European Championship was held from January 9th to 26th, 2020 in Norway , Austria and Sweden . Ten years after the 2010 European Championship, the Austrian Handball Federation was once again host to a major international handball event. Spain became European champions with a 22:20 final victory over Croatia .

Host

Award of the European Championship 2020 in Dublin

The European Handball Federation (EHF) Congress awarded the event during its meeting on September 20, 2014 in Dublin , Ireland . For the first time in history, a European handball championship was held in three countries. Originally Austria, Sweden and Norway still applied as individual organizers, but then joined forces for organizational reasons and now pursued the common goal of hosting the 2020 Men's European Championship.

Due to the merger of the three nations, the new game mode came into force in 2020 with the increase from 16 to 24 nations. Originally this was only planned for the final round in 2022.

The EM 2020 was originally scheduled from January 10th to 26th, but the EHF changed the timeframe of the continental title fights in September 2018.

Austria, Sweden and Norway were already qualified as organizers for the European Championship 2020. The remaining nations were determined during the European Championship qualification phase in the 2018/19 season.

referee

Since the 2020 European Championship was increased to 24 teams and was held in three countries for the first time, the EHF introduced a new system to distribute the burden on the referees. A total of 18 teams were used in the preliminary round, which was played in Graz, Vienna, Trondheim, Malmö and Gothenburg. Eleven of these 18 teams were used exclusively in the preliminary round. The seven others were used both in the preliminary round and in the main round. Furthermore, five more pairs of referees can be added at the start of the main round. Which teams were used on the final weekend will be determined in the course of the tournament.

On December 27, 2019, the EHF announced that the Nikolić / Stojković team could not take part in the tournament. Nenad Nikolić sustained an injury last October. Contrary to the forecast, the injury had not healed, so that timely preparation was not possible. The Serbian team was replaced by the Latvian referees Zigmars Sondors and Renars Licis. These were also used exclusively in the preliminary round.
