The 6th European Men's Handball Championship took place from January 22nd to February 1st, 2004 in Slovenia . The German national handball team was able to secure the title for the first time with a final victory against hosts Slovenia. After the main round, the tournament for Switzerland was over, Austria could not qualify for the European Championship.

The main round games took place in Celje and Ljubljana. Two groups were formed from the twelve teams from the preliminary round. In group I the first three of groups A and B played, in group II the first three of groups C and D. The points from the preliminary round that were scored against the other teams that had also reached the main round were taken over . The first and second placed in each group advanced to the semifinals, the third played the direct qualification for the European handball championship 2006 in Switzerland.
