Handball European Championship 2014 / qualification

This page describes the qualification for the 2014 Men's Handball European Championship .

mode

16 national teams will take part in the 2014 European Championship. Of the 39 teams registered, the hosts and defending champions Denmark qualified directly. The other 38 nations have to qualify for the tournament in two group phases.

A list was drawn up according to the current ranking of the EHF men's national teams. Of this, the last 16 teams first had to go to the first qualifying round; the best 22 teams were immediately seeded for the second qualifying round.

1st qualifying round

These 16 teams were randomly divided into four groups of four teams each. Six teams qualified for the second qualifying round: the respective group winners and the two best-placed runners-up in the group.

From June 8 to 10, 2012, the groups were played in a simple round- robin tournament .

All games took place in Nicosia , Cyprus . The Ukraine team advanced to the second qualifying round as group winners.

All games took place in Rishon Lezion ( Israel ). Romania moved into the second qualifying round as group winners. As one of the top two runners-up in the group, Israel reached the next round.

2nd qualifying round

Participants were the 6 qualified teams from the 1st round. Then there were the 22 teams that were immediately seeded for the second qualifying round.

These 28 teams were randomly divided into 7 groups of 4 teams each. From October 31, 2012 to June 16, 2013, the games will be played in group mode with a return leg.

The group winners and runners-up as well as the best third-placed group qualify for the 2014 European Handball Championship. To determine the best third party in the group, the results will be assessed against the group winner and second.

In the ranking of the seven thirds in the group in order to assign the 15th and last qualification place, only the results against the respective two best-placed teams in the groups were taken into account. In the end, the team from Russia prevailed here as the best third party just ahead of the team from Germany.
