The Austrian men's national handball team represents the Austrian Handball Federation at international handball tournaments .
The team played their first international match in handball history against the German national team on September 13, 1925 in Halle (Saale) , with the Austrian team winning 6: 3. The record national player is Ewald Humenberger with 246 appearances ahead of Patrick Fölser with 218 and Andreas Dittert with 203 games.
Participation in championships (indoor handball)
The team has taken part in the indoor handball world championships five times . At the 1938 World Cup in Germany, the team won the silver medal. At the 1958 World Cup in the German Democratic Republic , Austria failed in the preliminary round. In 1988 Austria won the "C-WM" in Portugal.
At the 1993 World Cup in Sweden , the team took the last place in the group after the preliminary round and after two wins and one draw in the placement round, they finished 14th. At the 2011 World Cup , the team reached 18th place.
As the host of the 2010 European Handball Championship , Austria qualified for a European Handball Championship for the first time . At the European Handball Championship 2020 , Austria - again as the host of the preliminary and main round - achieved its best final ranking in the Euro so far with an 8th place.
