The 24th men's handball world championship was held from January 15 to February 1, 2015 in Qatar . The French team , who defeated the hosts' team in the final with 25:22, became world champions.
host
On January 27, 2011, Qatar was chosen as the host in Malmö by the Council of the International Handball Federation (IHF).
The handball associations of Norway, Poland, South Korea, Qatar and France were candidates to host the World Cup. The handball association of Qatar announced its application in December 2010. South Korea had applied to host both the Men's World Championship and the Women's World Championship, but withdrew its candidacy for the Men's World Cup at the beginning of January 2011. So in January 2011 there were four applicants to choose from.
After hosting the European Handball Championship in 2010 , the Austrian Handball Federation also considered applying for the 2015 World Championship, but then expressed its interest in hosting the World Handball Championship in 2017 .
Venues
The games of the preliminary round took place in groups A and B in all three halls, group C in the Duhail Sports Hall and Ali Bin Hamad Al Attiya Arena and group D in the Lusail Multipurpose Hall and Duhail Sports Hall .

qualification
24 teams took part in the tournament. Spain as world champions in 2013 and Qatar as hosts were automatically qualified .
Exclusion of Australia
According to the IHF, the Oceanic Continental Handball Federation OCHF was informed prior to the qualification of the oceanic teams on April 11, 2014 that the future status of the continental federation would be decided by the IHF Council on July 8, 2014 in Zagreb, and asked to set the qualifying dates move. The qualification took place anyway, but on July 8, 2014 the IHF Council decided against the recognition of the OCHF as a continental association. The reason for the loss of the OCHF's recognition as a continental federation was Article 10, Paragraph 2 of the IHF statutes, according to which a continental federation must “have at least ten members”. The withdrawal of the status of a continental federation led to the loss of the starting place for the world championship. Accordingly, the Australian team was excluded from participation.
Wildcard for Germany
Originally, the German team failed to qualify for the 2015 World Cup in the playoff to Poland. The space vacated by the revocation of the OCHF statute as a continental association was awarded to the German handball team. This decision was justified by the fact that it was the best-placed team at the 2013 World Cup. This decision was justified with the amendment to Section 2 (8) of the regulations for IHF competitions on May 30, 2014:
"If the team of a federation that has qualified for the World Championship does not take part, the IHF Executive Committee shall decide on a respective substitute nation. If a Continental Confederation does not use its performance or compulsory places, or if another place is open due to any other reasons, the IHF Executive Committee shall decide on the reallocation of such places. "
This procedure of the IHF was criticized in public. The German ex-world handball player Daniel Stephan called the decision of the IHF "extremely questionable". The former top scorer of the German league Konrad Wilczynski described this approach as a catastrophe, but understandable from a sports-political point of view.
Iceland also criticized this decision, as the change in the rules for IHF competitions took place after the European qualification and, according to the previous version of Section 2, Paragraph 8, is awarded to the continental federation, which is the reigning world champion:
"If the team of a federation that has qualified for the World Championship does not take part, the first substitute nation of the continent in question shall take that place. If the first substitute nation does not take part, the second substitute nation shall take the place. If this team also does not take part, the place will be allocated to the continental confederation of the reigning World Champion, which will then announce the substitute nation. If the first substitute nation does not take part, the second substitute nation shall take the place. If this team also does not take part, the IHF Executive Committee shall decide. "
Before the change, the place should have been awarded to the Icelandic handball team, who, together with the Hungarian and Serbian teams , were reported by the EHF to the IHF on June 6, 2014 as possible successors .
Withdrawal from Bahrain and United Arab Emirates
The associations of the teams from Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates , who qualified with 2nd and 4th place in the Asian Championship , announced on November 8, 2014 that they would not participate in the World Cup. The United Arab Emirates team cited insufficient preparation as the reason. Both teams are speculated about a boycott for political reasons. Shortly afterwards, the two countries wanted to take part, but were then excluded from the IHF and fined.
On November 21, 2014, the IHF decided that the Asian places that had become vacant should not be filled by substitutes from Asia alone, but made available to the associations from Europe and Asia. These nominated Iceland and Saudi Arabia as successors.

Television broadcast
At the beginning of 2014, the TV rights for the Men's World Cup in Qatar and France and the Women's World Cup in 2015 and 2017 were sold to the Qatari subsidiary of Al Jazeera beIN Sports for a record sum of CHF 100 million .
ARD, ZDF, Sport1 and Sportdeutschland.tv were unable to reach an agreement with beIN Sports on German TV rights at the end of 2014. Due to a delay in responding to a timely offer, the public broadcasters, according to their own statements, “could no longer guarantee that live broadcasts from Qatar could be guaranteed in the quality that ARD and ZDF are accustomed to”. One reason given for not broadcasting was satellite encryption - since many channels can also be received abroad, the satellite transmission should be encrypted so that the exclusive rights of other European broadcasters are not violated. The encryption would contradict the basic mandate of the public broadcasters and "the European principle of" free flow of information "". On the other hand, according to Hassan Moustafa, President of the International Handball Federation, the bid was too low. The broadcasters involved rejected this statement.
On December 29, 2014, the pay TV broadcaster Sky announced that it had secured the rights for all German and Austrian games, as well as for selected top games such as the semi-finals and the final. Sky also acquired the rights for the free-to-air area, so that 50 more games were broadcast online on sky.de free of charge with English commentary. In addition, the Austrian team's games could be seen on ORF Sport Plus and on the Internet at sport.orf.at .
