Jérôme Fernandez (born March 7, 1977 in Cenon ) is a French handball coach and former handball player of Spanish descent. Fernandez played 390 international matches for the French men's national handball team from 1997 to 2015 and is France's record scorer with 1,463 goals . He is a knight of the French Legion of Honor and an officer of the French National Order of Merit .
Fernandez, who last played for Pays d'Aix UC and ran for the French men's handball team (shirt number 2), could be used in many ways in the backcourt ; The right-handed player preferred to play on the left in the back room.
Club career
Jérôme Fernandez started playing handball at Club La Bastidienne. From 1985 he played in Carbon-Blanc . In 1993 he moved to Girondins de Bordeaux HBC and in 1997 to Toulouse Union HB . With Toulouse he won the French Cup in 1997/1998. In 1999 he was hired by Montpellier HB ; with this club he won the French championship in 1999/2000 and 2001/02 and the French Cup in 1999/2000, 2000/01 and 2001/02.
In 2002 he moved to FC Barcelona . With Barcelona he won the Spanish championship in 2002/03 and 2005/06, the EHF Cup in 2002/03 , the Copa del Rey de Balonmano in 2003/04 and 2006/07 , the Spanish Supercup in 2003/2004, and the European Supercup in 2003/2004 as well as the Copa ASOBAL and the EHF Champions League in 2004/05 . In 2008, league rival BM Ciudad Real Jérôme Fernandez made a contract offer, which he accepted. With Ciudad Real he won the Spanish championship and the EHF Champions League in 2008/09. Another Spanish championship followed in the 2009/10 season.
In September 2010, Jérôme Fernandez moved to the German champions THW Kiel as a short-term replacement for the injured Daniel Narcisse . At the end of the 2010/11 season, he was also signed briefly by the French first division club Fenix Toulouse Handball , for which he played from 1997 to 1999. From summer 2015 he was under contract with Pays d'Aix UC . He ended his career after the 2016/17 season.
National team
His successes in the national team include victories at the 2001 , 2009 , 2011 and 2015 World Championships . He won bronze at the 2003 World Cup and the 2005 World Cup .
He and his team won the European Championship in 2006 , 2010 and 2014 .
At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 and in London in 2012 , he won the gold medal with France.
Coaching career
Fernandez also held the position of assistant coach from his move to Pays d'Aix UC in 2015. In the 2016/17 season he worked as a player-coach at Pays d'Aix UC. Since then he has been a coach at Pays d'Aix UC.
