The 17th men's handball world championship was held from January 23 to February 4, 2001 in France . A total of 24 teams initially competed against each other in groups. This was followed by elimination games with round of 16 , quarter-finals , semi-finals and finals as well as placement games for places three to eight. France became world champions in 2001 after beating Sweden 28:25 in the final.
