The 15th men's handball world championship was held from May 17 to June 1, 1997 in Japan . Germany could not qualify for this tournament. A total of 24 teams initially competed against each other in groups. This was followed by elimination games with round of 16 , quarter-finals , semi-finals and finals as well as placement games for places three to eight. Russia became world champion in 1997 after beating Sweden 23:21 in the final.
